The Salem Witch Trials

The Salem witch trials is one of the most infamous events in New England history. Authur Miller's play The Crucible is a dramatic retelling of this historical event and one of the best known ways we are familiar with this historic time.

Today we will review several sources on this period in time. It will be necessary to cite these sources in NoodleTools. Using the notecard feature take several relevant notes from at least one of the sources cited.

Pamphlet Project on a Historic Quake

Summary of Project:

You are going to construct a pamphlet about an historic earthquake. You will work with your group to collect data, and turn in your own pamphlet. This pamphlet will describe when and where the earthquake took place, the kind of plate tectonics, amount of damage to cities and people, and the kinds of preparation that was done either before or after the earthquake to prevent damage from future quakes.

1) Front Page of Pamphlet
a. Title
b. Colored Picture or something creative related to earthquakes
c. Lower right corner: Name, Date, and Period
2) 1st Page—The Facts of the Quake
a. Where the quake took place, labeled picture of country and continent where it is located
b. When it took place
c. Describe the magnitude, depth, and the number of aftershocks from quake
3) 2nd Page—Illustrations and Descriptions
a. Describe and draw a picture of the plate tectonics near the place of the quake
b. Describe & draw the type of fault that the earthquake came from
c. Label and explain a picture of P and S Waves
4) 3rd Page – Destruction, Damage, & Prevention
a. The amount of people who were injured and/or died
b. The amount of money that it took to rebuild the city, village, or land
c. Unique facts about that quake, (ex. warning system, type of buildings destroyed {or not} humanitarian aid from other countries, repair processes)
d. The kind of damage resulting from the quake, example: fire, water or gas lines,
tsunami, liquefaction, mudslides, or sink holes.
5) 4th Page – Where we live
a. Draw and label a picture of the plate tectonics effecting where we live in Washington
b. Describe in words the movement of the plates.
c. Draw & label major fault lines in our area.
d. Explain why it’s easier to predict the location, than time of a quake.
6) Back Page of Pamphlet—Poem, Song, Rap or Short Story
a. Create a poem, song, rap, or short story that relates to the quake
b. Bottom half is the rubric that is for Mrs. Johnson to grade (very important!!!)

You may check out most books for 2 weeks. Reference books and designated reserve books circulate overnight. There is no fine for ordinary checkout. There is a fine of $.50 PER DAY for overdue overnight materials. Overnight reserved books must be returned before first period on the day that they are due.

Calvert High School Media Center has a large selection of magazines for your enjoyment. New magazines may be checked out overnight. Overdue magazines have a fine of $.25 per day.

Any books that are checked out in your name are your responsibility, even if you checked them out for a friend. If you friend does not return them, you will have to pay for them.

Today we will be setting up your NoodleTools account. The account we set up today will be the account you will use this year as well as in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. Follow the directions and set up your NoodleTools account. Write you Personal ID and Password on the numbered paper (question 18). Remember your personal ID should be your first name and last name.

What the media center expects from you:

Atmosphere – The media center is expected to be a comfortable place to conduct research, work on homework, class projects/assignments, and study.

Passes – During class time you are expected to have a pass when visiting the media center. Please have your teacher include the reason for your visit on the pass.

Lunch - During lunch the Media Center is a no food zone. Is is also expected to be a quite zone for reading and studying. Games will not be allowed on media center computers. However, board games are available.

Sign-in – When visiting the media center during lunch, after school, or with a pass from class you must sign in at the desk and sign out before leaving.

Internet – Please remember your Internet agreements. E-mail, social networking sites, and games are not permitted on school computers. All Internet sites visited should be school appropriate. Internet use during the school day should be for schoolwork only. If you are not following the rules you will be asked to give up your computer.

No eating or drinking in the media center.

Dance Review Webquest

Your dancing mission, if you choose to accept it, is to create a “dance extravaganza” power point that reviews your favorite areas of dance. The purpose of this project is to research and develop a teaching tool for future dancers to use in their learning of unfamiliar forms of dance.
Task
On a whole, you will be required to define, give examples, name important founders, list choreographers, and record specific vocabulary for each genre of dance. The following is a more specific example of your task:
Genres: Ballet, Modern, Hip-hop, Jazz, and Tap

TOOLS TO CREATE SIMPLE INTERNET SCAVENGER HUNTS:
There are several simple web applications that teachers can use to easily have a list of websites where students can go to find the answers to specific questions on a scavenger hunt. The sites listed provide screenshots of the websites as well as their URL addresses, and they also don’t require a teacher to register to use them. They include:

MinMu: With MinMu, all you do is paste the URL addresses of as many web pages as you want into a box (no registration is required), and you are given one URL address for all of them. Click on it, and you’re shown a screen that not only shows the links to all of the sites, but also thumbnail images of them.
Sqworl: Sqworl is very, very similar to MinMu.
ShareTabs: ShareTabs also appears very similar to Sqworl and Minmu.
Viewista: Viewista is similar to the last three tools. One neat feature of Viewista is that it allows various options on how to view the multiple sites, including vertically and through a slideshow mode.
Citebite: Citebite allows you to highlight specific areas of online text and then gives you a specific URL linking to what you’ve highlighted. For example, instead of students to find answers to some questions by reading an entire New York Times, you can highlight specific parts of the article for students to link to or you may link to the entire article without the highlighted parts. It’s an excellent tool for differentiated instruction. You can use the URL’s of the Citebite excerpts in the previously mentioned tools.
Daft Doggy, unlike the previous web applications, Daft Doggy requires registration in order to use it, but it only takes seconds. And the benefits make it worthwhile. Daft Doggy lets you easily create a slideshow of websites, and all the links on those sites are “live” in the slideshow. But the key advantage that it offers over some of the other tools is that you can also leave written and audio instructions for what students should do.
Fur.ly is a new tool that lets you combine multiple links into one. It’s a little different from others -- they show you visual snapshots of each site that you can then click on one at a time. Fur.ly, on the other hand, shows you the first link in the collection and you can then click on arrows to go review each one.

Creating a work cited list

It is important to document the sources you use for written reports and multimedia projects following the latest edition of the MLA Handbook, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition. NoodleTools will assist you with citing your sources following the latest edition of the MLA handbook.

Today's assignment will allow you to demonstrate your expertise using NoodleTools to cite a variety of sources .

Step 1: Create a new list titled "Camelot."

Step 2: Cite the below sources. (As you connect to the following links/resources below examine each source carefully and select the most accurate description of the source from the NoodleTools drop down menu.)

Hint: When you are finished, you should have cited a film or video recording, a reference source, and articles from a newspaper, journal, and magazine.

Step 3: Print your works cited list. When your list is opened in MS Word, insert your name on the top right.

Today we will be setting up or updating your NoodleTools account. Your NoodleTools account will be the account you will use this year as well as in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.

Follow the directions and set up your NoodleTools account. For Calvert High School your personal ID should be your first name and last name. If you had something else for your personal ID please go into account management and update your information. For memory's sake it is highly recommend that you use your Student ID as your NoodleTools password.
